It has also been argued that the role played by ingested substances is nonspecific meaning that they apply to EDs as well (259). Future research should control for restrained eating, which has not been adequately done.
These studies also demonstrate that sugar-exposed adolescents exhibit higher preference for cocaine (164) but not alcohol (163) in adulthood. Differences in the neurobiological substrates underlying intake behavior of food and drugs abuse are likely explained by changes in the motivational aspect of food intake rather than by deficits in hedonic processing (162).
